Police are investigating the cause of a blaze in Laval's Pont Viau district overnight.

It started above Bar La Legende, at 14 Boulevard des Laurentides. The bar had been closed for some time.

According to Laval police, it began in an apartment located on the second floor of the building. Investigators say the rooms were being used for a notable marijuana grow-operation.

After firefighters extinguished the flames, they discovered about a thousand young plants.

"These were not mature plants." says Frank Di Genova, public relations officer for the Laval police, "They were smaller plants. Each has an estimated street value of about $500.00."

Police believe the extra equipment being used to run the grow-op created an electrical short circuit, that caused the fire.

Di Genova says the apartment was rented. No one was in the building at the time of the fire.

Police have yet to interrogate the building's owner.
