Quebec's education minister is fuming over the contract for the rector of Bishop's University in Lennoxville, near Sherbrooke.

Michael Goldbloom is due a severance of more than $620,000 when his contract ends in 2018, equal to two years’ salary for Goldbloom, including allowances and benefits.

Education Minister Francois Blais said this sends the wrong message in a time of austerity.

Bishop's University has just over 2,800 students, and according to Blais, is overwhelmed by financial difficulties.

Goldbloom is paid a yearly salary of more than $270,000 as the rector of Bishop's University. He also receives benefits and other paid expenses totalling more than $32,000 a year.

Blais said he's shocked a contract with a severance like this even exists for a university director.

Goldbloom has been the rector at Bishop's since 2008 and began his second term in the summer of 2013.

Blais said all contracts for university directors have been overseen by the ministry of education since 2013.

Blais said he intends to hold the university accountable and will look for ways to act.
