Quebec's Education Minister is not commenting -- yet -- about the ethical lapse by the chair of the Lester B. Pearson school board.

Earlier this year an ethics commissioner found Suanne Stein Day had repeatedly violated the school board's code of ethics.

However that same board is powerless to act against her.

That has the education critics in the National Assembly demanding the the government take action.

"Nobody can hide behind supposed democratic legitimacy and continue to rule if they break the ethics code," said Jean-Francois Roberge.

"If you broke the ethics code, you have to face consequences. It's the responsibility of the minister, Mr. Proulx, to take action."

Opposition leader Jean-Francois Lisée said the school board should be trusted.

"What I want is that the internal governance of the school board works. I think when you have a problem like that, you have to have the means within the school board to go all the way and make the right decisions," said Lisée.

"I think the minister should be vigilant, but I think you should respect and trust the board's democratic body and principles."

Education Minister Sebastien Proulx said last week that he was aware of the ethical breach and was keeping a close eye on the matter.

On Tuesday Proulx said he was saving his comments on the Lester B. Pearson board issues until "later."

At a board meeting Monday evening Stein Day told the public she had made an error -- only to immediately tell reporters that she had not committed any "legal or moral wrongdoing."
