MIRABEL - Generic drug-maker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. is shutting a recently acquired Montreal-area plant, putting 340 people out of work.

The Israeli generic drug giant acquired the plant last year when it purchased Germany's Ratiopharm; Teva had already announced plans to either sell the plant in Mirabel, within a certain deadline, or shut it down.

A news release from the union representing Teva workers says they were provided details Tuesday of plans for the shutdown.

Layoffs will begin next March, the Canadian Auto Workers union said.

The majority of employees will continue working for several more months, through the summer, and a smaller number will help dismantle the facility at the end of the year.

Teva has 1,900 employees in Canada.
