NEW DELHI -- Alexandre Despatie of Laval, Que., won the one-metre springboard competition Sunday at the Commonwealth Games diving pool for the third time in a row, becoming the first Canadian to collect seven career gold medals in the Games.

Diving began its four-day run and Canada took another gold when Jennifer Abel of Laval and Emilie Heymans of St. Lambert, Que., won the women's three-metre synchro.

Australians took the other medals -- Briony Cole and Sharleen Stratton the silver and Jaele Patrick and Olivia Wright the bronze.

Australian Matthew Mitcham, the Beijing Olympic 10-metre platform gold medallist, was second to Despatie in the one metre. Another Australian, Scott Robertson, took the bronze.

Despatie's first Commonwealth gold came in the 1998 Games at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when he was 13.

"It feels like a long time ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday," said Despatie. "Hopefully I have a bit more to give. At 25 years of age it's weird being called a veteran."

Despatie, who won the one- and three-metre plus the three-metre synchro with Arturo Miranda of Montreal at Melbourne four years ago, also led the one-metre qualifiers Sunday morning in an event he competes in infrequently.

"I don't often do the one-metre anymore, the last time I did it was at the last Commonwealth Games," he said.

Australia won the women's 10-metre platform synchro Sunday night when Melissa Wu and Alexandra Croak finished first with 336.76 points. Pandelela Pamg and Mun Yee Leong of Malaysia won silver and Cole and Anabelle Smith of Australia took the bronze.
