Canadian diver Alexandre Despatie has captured bronze in the men's three-metre springboard at the world swimming championships.

China's He Chong won the gold with a score of 505.20 points Thursday to beat Troy Dumais of the United States, who had 498.40. Despatie, who was leading after Wednesday's semifinals, scored 490.30.

Despatie, from Laval, Que., was denied his fourth world title, but still picked up the eighth medal of his career.

Synchronized swim team nets bronze

Canada's women's synchronized swimmers won their second medal of the world championships as they finished bronze in the combo free final on Wednesday.

It is Canada's first medal in combo - which combines solo, duet and a team performances - since FINA introduced the event in 2003.

Team members in the event were Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon of Riviere-du-Loup, Que., Camille Bowness of Beaconsfield, Que., Montreal's Jo-Annie Fortin, Sandy Gill of Coquitlam, B.C., Chloe Isaac of Brossard, Que., Eve Lamoureux of Montreal, Stephanie Leclair of Gatineau, Que., Elise Marcotte of Ancienne-Lorette, Que., Karine Thomas of Gatineau, Que., and Valerie Welsh of Saint-Nicolas, Que.

Prior to the start of the championships, Canada had set its sights on a podium finish in combo.

'Our objectives have been met thanks to the outstanding team spirit and focus,' said head coach Denise Sauve. `They are so mentally tough. Nothing could stop them.'

Sauve says the medal is the result of a combined effort.
