Pierre Curzi and Jean-Martin Aussant confirmed that they would consider becoming candidates to lead the Parti Quebec if Pauline Marois were to step aside.
Curzi, the MNA from Borduas was one of the five PQ MNAs who left the party in June. He makes no secret of his ambitions to lead.
"If there were to be a leadership campaign, I would be candidate," he told The Canadian Press in a telephone interview. Curzi made a series of interviews on the state of the Parti Quebecois Friday.
He said that certain people have already lined up behind him, without elaborating further.
Curzi said he doesn't' know whether Marois could survive the leadership questions she is now enduring.
The two-day PQ caucus meeting to be held Wednesday and Thursday will determine the future of the Marois leadership, said Curzi.
Jean-Martin Aussant, MNA for Nicolet-Yamaska, would also consider joining a potential leadership race, he confirmed in a telephone interview with the Nouvelliste newspaper.
"It's something I would think about," he said.
"If the PQ were to become the sovereignist party that it should be, it would be definitely more efficient to be in one party rather than to start another alongside it," he said.
Aussant said that a new party remains necessary because no party currently represents that vision. He said about 40 percent of Quebecers want sovereignty and now have no party to vote for.
Marois told The Canadian Press Saturday that she has no intention of quitting and that her strong leadership is needed in this difficult times.
