Montreal councillors will pick a new mayor today: the city's third in less than a year.
A special meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. where the five candidates will argue as to why they should be chosen as interim mayor. Councillors will then cast their votes with a secret ballot.
The candidates are Laurent Blanchard, Chair of the Executive Committee and Vison Montreal member; Harout Chitilian, the current speaker and a former Union Montreal member; Jane Cowell-Poitras, the current pro-tem mayor and former member of Union Montreal; Francois Croteau of Projet Montreal, borough mayor for Rosemont-La Petite Patrie; Alan DeSousa, former member of Union Montreal and borough mayor of St. Laurent.
Former mayor Michael Applebaum was chosen in a similar procedure just last November following the resignation of Gerald Tremblay. Applebaum resigned last Tuesday, one day after he was arrested and charged with 14 counts of corruption and fraud.
