QUEBEC CITY - While others fly south to hit the beaches, Premier Jean Charest went the other direction Sunday morning, taking a three-day trip with a delegation to promote his Northern Plan.

Charest is being accompanied by Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume, Minister of Natural Resources, Clement Gignac and representatives of 25 companies in the region of Quebec specialized in mining and construction, among others.

The group will travel to La Grande and in the Cree community of Bougoumou.

"It's such a massive program over a long period of time and it requires us to communicate to discuss what is the Northern Plan, what it will bring and how it will allow us to benefit from the development," said Charest.

Charest spoke to journalists at the LG2 Hydro dam, a source of pride for Quebecers.

"The idea of this mission is to connect the north and south, to give a chance to entrepreneurs in the south, in this case the provincial capital, to be on contact with the northern projects to be able to measure the size of these projects and to see how they differ from projects in the south," said Charest.

Participants will also visit the facilities of the multinational mining Goldcorp Eleonore mine.

The Northern Plan is the flagship project of provincial Liberal Premier Jean Charest, which he has been promoting heavily as the next provincial election approaches.

The government believes the Northern Plan will generate investments of $80 billion over 25 years.
