A fire in a Villeray restaurant in the wee hours of Thursday morning has been confirmed by police to be the work of arsonists.
Firefighters arrived at Italien Café at 1875 Everett St., near Cartier St., at about 12:55 a.m.
The ground floor restaurant sat below two storeys of apartments, which were evacuated by firefighters.
A three-month old baby was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, but did not need to be transported to hospital. No one else was injured.
Police suspect the fire began with a Molotov cocktail. Witnesses told police they saw two "suspicious-looking" men standing outside the restaurant a few minutes before the fire broke out.
There was another fire late Wednesday night at the back of a three-storey house in Outremont.
Firefighters arrived at the house on Hutchinson St., just north of Bernard Ave., at around 11 p.m. The fire began in a shed and spread to the main house. All the residents were evacuated in time and no one was injured.
The fire department has handed the file over to the Montreal police, which is investigating.
