MONTREAL—Concordia University says $70,000 has been raised to benefit the family of slain Chinese student Lin Jun.

Murdered in May, the 33-year-old exchange student’s mother and father have been in Montreal for over a month. Faced with a decision over what to do with the young man’s remains, the family has called for financial help over the past few weeks.

Jun’s parents have said that they would like to stay in Quebec until a verdict is reached in the trial of their son’s alleged killer, Luka Rocco Magnotta—closure that may be years away. Concordia’s fund is meant to help the family with its expenses during its time in Montreal.

Magnotta has pleaded not guilty to various charges, his preliminary hearing is scheduled for next March. The grisly killing and dismembering of Jun was filmed and the video was subsequently posted online.

A public service will be held for Jun on Saturday at the Montreal Chinese alliance Church in Hampstead. The memorial will start at 10:00 a.m.
