QUEBEC- The National Assembly will be active in full swing this Boxing Day, but its armchairs won't be filled by their regular occupants.

Starting on Dec. 26, the 64th session of  Quebec’s Youth Parliament will take up shop in the assembly until Dec. 30, bringing together around a hundred of the province's young people.

The participants -- all between the ages of 18 and 25 -- will take advantage of the holidays to discuss and debate social issues, while experiencing the parliamentary system first-hand.

Johanne Brodeur will fill the seat of the Lieutenant Governor. She feels that Quebec's Youth Parliament helps familiarize young people with democratic foundations.

Four bills have been  prepared to be discussed during this session of youth parliament.

Themes have already been decided upon, and will focus on the representation of gender in the labour market, genomic information from a public health standpoint, violence in society, and on reforming the immigration model.

The discussions will be open, but held in a formal setting.

The Quebec Youth Parliament was established in 1949 and is now part of the National Assembly’s parliamentary traditions.
