Two Quebecers who work for the horse show Cavalia have been arrested in China on allegations of smoking marijuana.

They were jailed for at least a week following their arrest on July 14, as Chinese authorities prepared to deport them.

World Affairs Canada confirmed on the day of the arrest that consular services were provided to two Canadians who were detained in Beijing, China, as well as to families.

Eric Paquette, media relations director for the equestrian show confirmed via email that the two individuals were repatriated back to Canada.

For his part, Éric Paquette, had acknowledged that the company was contacted by Chinese representatives to buy air tickets to repatriate the two individuals. He also refused to confirm the details of the case for privacy reasons.

"We are happy they are back," Paquette told CTV Montreal.

Their names have not been released.

The Montreal-based equestrian show has been performing in China since 2015.

Cavalia announced in 2016 that they were allying with the Chinese firm Gold-Finance in a partnership to set up a show for debut in early 2018.
