Two people suffered minor injuries overnight when a fire broke out in a seniors' residence.

One of those hurt was a firefighter who breathed in dust when a wall was opened. Meanwhile one resident was treated for stress.

Staff were alerted to the fire around 11:20 p.m. Monday when a woman went to the bathroom and saw smoke.

According to firefighters, the fire broke out between the ground floor and the second floor of the Manoir du Boisé Gagnon, in Bois des Filion in the Laurentians.

Crews were on the scene within moments and were able to put out the flames within 15 minutes.

The building does not have any sprinklers, and damage was limited to about six bedrooms.

However because most of the residents are in poor health, they were not allowed to return home overnight. Officials wanted to make sure they would not have to deal with smoke.

Francoise Juteau's 90-year-old mother lives at the residence.

"They told us not to worry, that everything was under control," said Juteau. "Everybody was gathered together, everything was fine, and they had all their medication."

"I found that the older people were calm, a little worried, but it was normal."

Residents were cared for by the Red Cross or by family members who were able to take them in overnight.

Some are now in hotels, while others that require more medical care have been transferred to long-term care facilities. Most are expected to be able to return home within a few days.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical problem.
