Authorities are alerting consumers to avoid ingesting a brand of hand sanitizer that has already claimed two Canadian lives in Ontario.
Hand sanitizers are never meant to be ingested but one brand, Bodico Hand Sanitize, has proved lethal, as it contains methanol rather than ethanol, the chemical which is marked on the label.
Methanol, as well as being lethal, can cause blindness.
Health Canada is issuing a recall on the following products: Bodico Hand Sanitizer (8fl oz, Lot B9002) and Bodico Hand Sanitizer with Aloe and Vitamin E (8fl oz, Lot B9001).
