Part of Highway 40 was closed overnight after a tractor trailer went off the road and crashed.

The incident happened shortly before midnight Tuesday on the service road of Highway 40 eastbound, near Cavendish Blvd.

Police said lanes were closed because of construction but the truck driver failed to notice the lineup of cars in time to avoid a collision. He swerved, struck one vehicle, and the truck came to a halt on its side on the grass beside the service road.

The truck driver suffered some bumps and a few cuts in the spill, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Nobody else was injured.

The trailer was ripped open in the fall and the truck's cargo of canned tomatoes spilled across the roadway.

Crews cleaned up the debris and removed the truck overnight.

The highway was reopened around 5:30 a.m.
