PK Subban might be taking in some Blue Jays and Raptors games between NHL seasons, but he wants Canadiens fans to know he’s hard at work getting ready for next season.

In an interview with RDS, the star defenceman said the public isn’t always privy to the less glamorous parts of maintaining his level of play.

“I don’t like having this much time on my hands, I really don’t,” he said. “I think people notice my summer because I’m active on social media and wherever I go, the camera always seems to find me. Aside from that, nobody sees the training stuff that I do or the treatment that I do or the stuff that actually goes into preparing for the season. That’s fine with me. I don’t want them to see that part.”

With training camp still months away, Subban said he’s looking forward to working with new Habs associate coach Kirk Muller again. Muller was an assistant coach with the team from 2006 until 2011. Subban said his game has matured since Muller was last behind the bench and he’s hoping to make the coaching staff’s job easy.

“The number one thing that Kirk Muller brings is a lot of respect,” said Subban. “He’s respected in the league by everybody. I’ve had the pleasure to play under him and we had some great years when he was in Montreal.”

Subban also reflected on the NHL retirement of Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk, who has announced he will be going back to his native Russia to play in the KHL. Subban called Datsyuk one of the few players in the league that could embarrass opposing defencemen.

“He’s the type of guy who would score highlight reel goals and would hold his head down. He’s a respected player in the league. I’m disappointed that he’s not back because I always enjoy watching him on TV. I always enjoy playing against him, even if it does mean I might end up on TSN or the highlights.”
