It's the first sign that summer is drawing to a close: classes begin this week at the majority of CEGEPs across the province.

Classes begin Monday Aug. 22 at Champlain, John Abbott and Vanier Colleges, as is the case for most of the French-language colleges in Quebec.

Class began last Wednesday at Marianopolis, while students at Dawson College report to school this coming Wednesday.

The first days of school won't be without incident.

700 members of a support staff union, who have been without a contract since March 31, 2015, will hold a half-day strike at a dozen CEGEPs.

As a result classes have been cancelled at those schools, including Rosemont and CEGEP St. Laurent.

Meanwhile younger students have at least one more week of summer vacation.

Although teachers at most school boards report to work on the 24th, classes for elementary and high school students begin next week.

Students at the Commission Scolaire de Montreal start on Aug. 29, while Marguerite Bourgeoys pupils have two half-days before their first full day of school on the 31st.

English language students have a few more days' grace, with classes starting on Aug. 31 at the EMSB, Lester B. Pearson, Riverside and most of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier schools.

Some elementary and high schools only start classes on Sept. 1.
