Metro passengers at the heavily-used Berri-UQAM station will have to get used to taking the stairs.

The STM has shut down a faulty escalator and estimates it will take six months to rebuild the moving staircase.

The escalator in question connects the platform from the orange line toward Cote Vertu to the green line toward Angrignon.

The STM says that after multiple problems, the escalator cannot be repaired. Instead the existing escalator will be torn down and a new one installed.

Most of the work will take place at night, although some work will take place during the day.
