People who live in the Lacey Green area of Kirkland like the character of their neighborhood – the tree-lined streets and the large lots and homes entice people to settle there. But some residents believe all that may be about to change.

Much of the nearby former Merck pharmaceutical plant, which sits between the TransCanada Highway and Brunswick Blvd., may become the site of a massive development, essentially doubling the size of the current neighbourhood.

“They’re putting over 800 units. Now, how are you going to fit 800 units on this? Well, you're going to put row houses and then stacked houses and six condos,” said Kirkland resident Cherine Cheftechi.

She says the already congested streets in the area will become even more so.

She worries the project will lower property values. She's circulated a petition asking councillors to vote against the project.

And they don't, she's sure she has enough support to force a registry and referendum.

CTV's request for an interview to discuss the project with the mayor or a Kirkland city councillor was turned down. We were told nobody would be available until Monday night's council meeting.
