ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast - Quebec has put down roots in Ivory Coast, opening a government office in the African country.

Quebec Minister of International Relations Christine St-Pierre and Ivory Coast Foreign Minister Marcel Amon-Tanoh signed an agreement in Abidjan just as the International Francophone Games launched.

According to St-Pierre this new Quebec office will allow for a deeper political relationship with Ivory Coast, as well as opportunities for economic, social and cultural partnerships.

The office will also have a mandate to strengthen the representation of Quebec in major international organizations in the Ivory Coast capital such as the African Development Bank and the World Bank Group.

The new office is part of how Quebec is restructuring its network of representation offices abroad.

Quebec currently has 26 offices in 14 countries. The province hopes to expand its network to a total of 33 offices in 19 countries in 2018-2019.
