A 21-year-old woman from Quebec City is suing the provincial police for $220,000 after having her teeth knocked out during a protest in Victoriaville.

Dominique Laliberté-Martineau said she was a peaceful protester at the outside the Liberal party convention that took place in Victoriaville on May 4, 2012.

During that protest students were spotted beating up a police officer, and the Surete du Quebec responded with tear gas, stun grenades, and rubber bullets.

Laliberté-Martineau contends she was not involved in any violent confrontation and was about to board a bus at 7 p.m. when she was hit in the face by a rubber bullet.

The impact broke her jaw and knocked out six teeth. She had to be operated on at a Quebec City hospital following the incident.

The lawsuit will argue that police were using excessive force, since provincial guidelines for the AR-1 rubber bullets indicate they are to be used only when facing a clear and immediate threat.
