MONTREAL - A 26-year-old woman was arrested at Trudeau Airport early Thursday morning after allegedly attempting to smuggle two kilograms of cocaine into Canada inside three pumpkins.

Mercedez Jerez Farias was in Montreal court Thursday to face charges of importing drugs and drug possession.

Scanning equipment had detected the material inside the pumpkins. It turned out to be bags filled with the chalky substance.

The RCMP have taken over the investigation.

A CBSA spokeswoman wasn't able to say where the passenger was coming from or whether she was a Canadian citizen.

The CBSA says that since the beginning of 2013, Montreal's airport has had 173 drug seizures. Ten of those involved cocaine — with roughly 44 kilos seized.
