A 51-year-old pedestrian has been killed in Lanoraie, a town of about 5,000 that sits 65 km northeast of Montreal.

The pedestrian died after a 60-year-old driver struck him with his van at about 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The victim was walking on the side of the Grande Cote W, also known as Route 138, at the time of the accident.

According to provincial police representative Melanie Dumaresq, the driver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time. Authorities are awaiting the results of a breathalyzer test.
