MONTREAL - The family of a teenager who drowned at a beach along the Riviere Rouge in 2008 wants to know why the local government is so quick to dismiss the idea of putting up a fence in a dangerous area.

Andrew Selby died while walking along the bank of the river and stepping into quicksand.

There have been several calls to put up fences, chains, and warning signs in the area, the most recent coming in a public inquiry report released this month.

"A fence is what we've been after since the beginning. That would solve the problem," said Andrew's uncle Gary Selby.

Several people have died in the same area, but previous coroner's reports have been ignored.

In addition to that, Selby says most Quebecers just don't realize that quicksand exists

"We don't know that there's quicksand in Quebec. We don't believe there is. There is," emphasized Selby.

"If the elements are right there's quicksand all over North America."
