The lifeless body of a newborn infant has been recovered from a garbage pail in Lac St. Jean, according to a published report.

The Surete de Quebec provincial police would not confirm the detail that the dead child was found in a garbage pail but confirmed that they responded to a call involving a dead child at 4:10 a.m. on St. Andre St. in Métabetchouan–Lac-à-la-Croix, a town of 4,000 about 70 km east of Saguenay.

The provincial SQ police confirmed that they have opened an investigation and are questioning possible witnesses.

It's not yet known whether the mother of the child will be charged. An autopsy is expected to be performed.

A neighbour told a reporter from the TVA network that the same mother had another child taken away by child protection authorities.
