Firefighters and police have put the lights out on a wish lantern festival planned for Monday night on Mount Royal.

Thousands of people were planning to release lit paper candles into the air in a ceremony the event’s Facebook page called a “symbolic gesture of releasing fears and worries.”

City officials said there are fears the lanterns could start a fire and could have an impact on the environment.

As many as 11,000 people said they were interested in attending the festival on the Facebook page, which now lists the event as cancelled.
