36-year-old Christian Chabot has been charged with two counts of murder after two bodies were found in a car stolen from Laval and left in rural Quebec.

On Monday a car was stolen from Laval and found that evening about 700 km away on the side of a road in Routhierville, Quebec.

About an hour before the car was discovered the vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run collision in nearby Causapscal.

Inside the car police found the bodies of Michelle Clusiau, 37, and her five-year-old son.

Police arrested Chabot the next day when he was spotted walking on train tracks in the village of Ste. Florence.

Appearing in court Chabot was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Chabot and Clusiau had been in a relationship at one point. Last year Chabot was convicted of assault and uttering threats and sentenced to one day in jail plus time served.

Court records show he was repeatedly accused of breaking his probation conditions and was detained for a few weeks in May before being released in early June.

Chabot's next scheduled court appearance is on June 19 in Amqui.
