A man in his twenties was shot and killed while sitting in a car in Montreal North.

The attack happened at 11:15 p.m. Thursday near Fortin St. and Gouin Blvd.

Witnesses who heard the shots called 9-1-1, and when police arrived they found a man sitting in a car, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

First responders gave him emergency first aid but the 22-year-old man died before he could be transported to hospital.

Police spent the night at the scene in an effort to find evidence indicating who shot the man, and talking to witnesses about what they saw.

Officers have confirmed the victim has a history of run-ins with the law.

He has reportedly been identified as Donald Cesar of Riviere des Prairies. Cesar's prior convictions include marijuana trafficking, negligent use of a firearm, and assaulting a police officer.
