The city of Laval is planning to make its snow clearing operations more efficient.

It will launch 14 pilot projects as it spends the next two years studying every facet of its operations, such as using less corrosive alternatives to road salt.

"We will be measuring everything we can measure: How long it takes for a truck to go from one place to another, the amount of snow and all the procedures will be measured," said Mayor Marc Demers.

Six municipal employees will be devoted to co-ordinating snow clearing operations in order to make them run more smoothly.

Laval spends about $5 million plowing and hauling away snow after each storm.

Demers said after the two years of research are completed, he hopes the city will end up saving considerable amounts of money in the long-term.
