Commentator and former journalist Anne Lagacé Dowson is throwing her hat back into the political ring – and will face a serious contender.

The former CBC and Radio-Canada journalist intends to run again under the NDP banner, this time in a faceoff against Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

Lagacé Dowson will run in the riding of Papineau, currently held by Trudeau.

In the 2008 election, Lagacé Dowson lost to Liberal candidate Marc Garneau, with the former astronaut taking 46 per cent of the vote to the ex-journalist’s 23 per cent.

“I decided to the join Tom Mulcair’s NDP because I want to be part of a team that has a new vision for families and a concrete plan for economic growth that respects the environment,” she said in a statement.

Lagacé Dowson said she’s ready to take on the new challenge of going up against Trudeau, who won in 2011 with a 10 per cent lead over the NDP candidate in the Papineau riding.

“The riding is the home to many economic and social challenges, and I have the necessary experience to face them,” she said.

She has relieved herself of broadcasting duties until at least after the federal election.
