A two-alarm fire has closed Notre Dame St. in Pointe Aux Trembles for several blocks.

The fire began at 4:30 a.m. and nearly four hours later it was still smoking.

40 firefighters rushed to 11801 Notre Dame East, near 6th Ave. when the basement of the two-storey rooming house caught fire.

Eight to 10 residents were evacuated from the building and it does not appear anyone has been injured, but as of 8 a.m. firefighters had not been able to enter the building to prove that was the case.

About an hour after the fire began the fire had reached the roof, and at some point in the morning the building collapsed.

When the fire is extinguished firefighters will examine the ruins to determine what sparked the fire.

Police diverted traffic while the fire was raging, forcing commuters to detour along Victoria St. from 4th to 8th Ave.
