An explosion at a Bombardier plant in the Eastern Townships overnight caused severe injuries in two people.

The blast happened shortly after midnight at the BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) facility in Valcourt, which is midway between Granby and Sherbrooke.

Two men, a 38-year-old employee and a 54-year-old security guard, were badly hurt and have been taken to the burn centre at l'Hopital de l'Enfant-Jesus in Quebec City.

Both are in medically-induced comas to treat their wounds.

The Workplace health and safety board (CSST) is investigating the apparent accident, which seems to have taken place in the research and design section of the building.

The site is also a factory that produces Ski-Doos, Sea-Doos and the Can-Am three-wheeled Spyders.

A larger explosion in Sherbrooke Thursday afternoon injured 19 people, at least five of whom have bad burns to more than 30 percent of their body.
