Kingston tragedy

It went from being a terrible accident to a mass murder investigation. Four dead females; three of them teenagers. The mother, father and brother were charge on Thursday, three weeks after their bodies were found in a submerged car in Kingston Mills locks, with murder in the first degree.

Police say cultural issues may have played a role.

Just read between the lines.

Men and women are equal in our society. Why does it seem so hard for some people to understand that? We do not live in the stone age. People coming to our country must accept it.

Yet, it would be wrong to paint all Afghanis with the same brush. Most of them are undoubtedly as disgusted with this as everyone else is.

But the bitter irony is young Canadians are dying in Afghanistan to try to change things to install values of decency and equality.

These four women living in Canada were entitled to that freedom.

As the Kingston police chief said, the women all shared the rights in our great country to live without fear.

That's something they tragically didn't get.

Divers/cite funding issue

One of the most popular self help books ever written was called How to Win Friends and Influence people. Fifteen million copies were sold.

Guess none of them made it to our federal Tories.

Their decision to pull money from the Divers/cite festival is wrong and stupid.

One hundred and fifty-five thousand dollars. That's less than most Tory ministers spend on government aircraft to fly them to corn-on-the-cob festivals.

Divers/cite is popular, and it brings in some serious tourist money.

You don't have to agree with it, you don't have to like it, but we live in a society of choice, of diversity. And of respect.

This Tory move smacks of discrimination. For a party that can't buy a seat in urban areas, it's a

curious decision. Maybe-- just maybe-- it's by design... It's the politics of division, and as Oscar Wilde said, a man cannot be too careful in his choice of enemies.

Bring back hockey in Quebec City!

Finally, this week, Are we going to see the return of hockey to la Veille Capitale?

With a new arena, and the deep pockets of Quebecor, a new team would thrive in Quebec City. It's a hockey town-- the old Canadiens/Nordiques rivalries were classics. But The Nordiques left town in 1995 for their Rocky Mountain high.

Maybe, somehow we can convince the Gary Bettmans of this world that the NHL needs to be in Quebec City and Winnipeg and Hamilton.

It IS our game and we need to bring it home.

In the words of Wayne Gretzky: "You miss 100% of the shots you never take."

I'm Barry Wilson and that's CTV postscript for this week.
