Over 100 mourners attended a vigil in Longueuil Friday evening to mark the death of Jenique Dalcourt, 23, who was attacked while on the bicycle path between Chambly Rd. and Normandie St., Tuesday evening and later succumbed to injuries in hospital.
Those in attendance at the solemn ceremony signed a memorial and held candles in the young woman's memory.
“I live close to here, it’s a quiet place, a nice area for living so we’re very horrified. This is the first time something like this has happened around here,” said nearby resident Marthe Savoie.
Savoie helped organize the event through social media which was attended mostly by nearby residents.
Police set up a command centre for the occasion and are inviting anybody with pertinent information to get in touch.
A small impromptu shrine had previously been assembled in honour of Dalcourt, consisting of flowers and graduation photographs of the woman.
While officers continue to look for evidence and the person or people responsible for the deadly attack, the city is taking steps to make the path safer.
The bulbs in several street lights have been swapped for LED bulbs and work crews removed entire trimmed trees so the light can be seen on the path at night.
The tree-trimming has revealed a sofa hidden behind the trees near the path, and a screwdriver and other tools at the scene.
Police say they have spoken to several witnesses but are being cagey about what they've said because they don't want to tip off the perpetrators.
