Two men are dead after a head-on collision on Highway 30 in Chateauguay.

Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday a car driven by an 89-year-old man heading west entered the eastbound side of the highway, and rammed into a car going west being driven by a 32-year-old man.

The two drivers were taken to hospital in critical condition but both died of their injuries. Their names have not been released.

Police don't know where or how the 89-year-old driver managed to get on the higihway in the wrong direction, but the nearest access ramp was several kilometres away from the scene. Each exit along the highway has clear signs warning drivers about which way to get on.

Police say neither driver had been drinking alcohol.

The SQ says the investigation is ongoing, and couldn't say whether the driver's advanced age may have played a role in the deadly collision. Police will be checking with the 89-year-old's relatives to see what kind of physcial and mental health the man was in.

In Quebec, drivers are subjected to a medical evaluation once they reach 75, and again at 80. The evaluation must then be repeated every two years.
