After 18 months without a fare increase, the STM is hiking rates as of July 1.

The cost of a monthly pass will rise $1 to $83.

A weekly pass will cost 25 cents more: $25.75.

A package of ten tickets will cost 50 cents more: $27.

For those who are able to take advantage of reduced fares, the cost of a monthly pass will rise 50 cents to $49.75, while the four-month rate is going up to $197.

The ten-ticket reduced rate is going up to $16.50.

There is one area where commuters will be getting more for their money. The STM is increasing the duration of the unlimited weekend pass, and it will be usable from 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. The price will increase by 75 cents, and cost $13.75.

All full fares for single trip, two-trip fare, one-day and three-day passes, and unlimited evening fare remain the same.

“It is not a big increase if you consider that not all the fares are going up and this is the lowest increase since 1998 and it's below inflation. And with all the data, Ithink it's a reasonable fare increase,” said STM spokesperson Luc Tremblay.

The opposition at city hall is condemning the rate hike.

“(This is the) first year we lost ridership in the last 20 years and then problems with services and what's going on, it's rubbing customers the wrong way,” said Projet Montreal city councillor Craig Sauve.

“We want riders to go on the STM. We want more riders to get in, so I don't think it's the right move. It doesn't indicate what the riders might want and a little more complicity for what they need,” he added
