Montreal boxing champion Jean Pascal caused a bit of an uproar on social media overnight when he bragged about how much money he earns.

In a tweet sent out late Thursday night Pascal wrote "I love Thursdays you know why?? Cuz it's #payday," and included a photo of a table piled with stacks of $100- and $20-bills.

That note outraged some of his fans and followers, who said showing off his money was low-class, ill-mannered, or as one said an attention-getting move from someone "in need of a psychiatrist."

Others found the picture amusing, noting that Pascal earned the money for winning a fight while unable to use one arm, and can do whatever he wants with his cash.

Pascal later told his followers that they needed to have a sense of humour while asking "can we still joke in 2013?"

That prompted yet more complaints from people who said the joke fell flat.

Earlier this week Pascal was given the green light to begin undergoing physiotherapy. He injured his arm and shoulder in his Dec. 19, 2012 bout against Aleksy Kuziemski.

The light heavyweight won in a unanimous decision despite hurting his left arm in the second round, throwing punches with only his right hand for 80 percent of the match.

It was Pascal's first fight since May 2011, when he lost the WBC title to Bernard Hopkins.

Pascal is scheduled to fight current WBC champion Chad Dawson in May. When the pair met before, Pascal defeated Dawson after the fight was stopped in the 11th round.
