A man is recovering from critical injuries after hitting a utility pole early Sunday morning in St. Jerome, about 60 kilometres northwest of Montreal.

The victim, whose name and age are not being released, was driving alone in his vehicle at 4:15 a.m. on de la Salette St., when he drove off the road.

Police believe the man may have been speeding as he hit a curve.

"The speed limit is 50 kilometres an hour, but it's a tight curve, and you don't have to go that fast to lose control," said Yvon Poulin of St. Jerome police.

Police don't believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, said Poulin.

The man is recovering at Sacre Coeur Hospital in Montreal.
