MONTREAL - The NDG Food Depot has been helping people in Montreal's West End since 1986.

"We're giving food to about 600 people a week," said director Fiona Keats.

But it's more than just a place to pick up canned goods.

It's become a place that serves other basic needs as well.

Stacey Bayne is a prime example.

She and several other women are now taking part in a three-month pre-employability workshop organized by the Food Depot.

Bayne is also teaching others how to cook within their means, "so that whatever you have in your cupboard you could probably put it together. and get a really good meal out of it," said Bayne.

Paula Kelly is a former volunteer. Now that she has a five-year-old son she needs the services herself.

"You wouldn't think so many people need so much help," said Kelly.

"Money's tight. Bills are always high and you can't always get what you need so coming here helps out a lot."
