It was a noisy lunch-hour Saturday for Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay.

Protesters against the reconstruction plans for the Turcot Interchange set-up camp outside Tremblay's home, armed with loud speakers blasting the sounds of construction.

Residents living near the interchange complain they will have to endure the sounds of heavy machinery for seven years.

The plan to rebuild the interchange is also under heavy criticism by environmentalists worried about increased vehicle emissions and urban sprawl.

More than 100 citizens will lose their homes as a result.

The Turcot Interchange links the Ville-Marie Expressway, the Decarie Expressway, highway 15 and highway 20.

It was completed in 1967.

It has to be rebuilt because it's deteriorating and it cannot handle the current volume of traffic.
