Montreal housing officials are reporting that residents of six households are without accommodations, as thousands of Quebecers swap homes on moving day

The city’s housing office (OMHM) reports that the number is down from 10 households left out in the cold last year.

OMHM director Patricia Bouchard said that the cases this year appear to require more attention than those from last year when most of the homeless situations resolved themselves.

The OMHM tries to help the low-income residents who are either homeless or about to be homeless, particularly those with dependent children.

In some extreme cases the displaced people will be put into emergency shelter.

The OMHM has a waiting list of 22 000 households for subsidized housing and attempts to add 200 units per year to the housing stock.
