The RCMP is trying to prevent yet another Canadian from leaving the country to join ISIS.
Ismael Habib, 28, has been on police radar for some time. Habib is Canadian-born but is suspected of becoming radicalized.
A week ago, Habib was arrested for threatening a girlfriend in Gatineau. She told police Habib was constantly reading and watching ISIS-related material featuring terrorists committing extremely violent acts.
Habib's father also told the press that his son flew to Turkey in 2012 to fight with ISIS, but was sent home by Turkish authorities.
The RCMP now says the young man was ready to return to the Middle East, where he has a wife, who's also suspected of becoming radicalized. Police produced a photo of Habib's supposed wife holding an AK-47. The prosecution also claims Habib lied in order to get his passport, so they're trying to get an order preventing him from travelling.
"Like any investigation we analyze what the evidence is, the police has their work to do, the prosecutors to see the admissibility of the evidence. Do we have enough evidence for each element of the offence? It's a continuing thing, it never stops," said Crown prosecutor Lyne Decarie.
On Friday, Habib was due to have a bail hearing, but instead was arraigned on an additional charge of wanting to leave Canada to participate in terror-related activities.
His bail hearing was postponed until the week of March 21 because the Crown wants to present more witnesses and evidence.
If he's released, there are good chances he'll be forced to wear a GPS ankle bracelet so police can track him - the same thing has been done on two other occasions with men suspected of wanting to fight with ISIS.
However, the Crown doesn't want to take any chances with Habib.
"We’re opposing bail, the judge will have to make that ruling but the Crown doesn't think he should be released," Decarie said.
