The provincial government is serving notice to Air Canada.

Quebec wants to know what the national airline is doing to maintain its spin-off aircraft maintenance company Aveos.

On Tuesday Justice Minister Jean-Marc Fournier said that Air Canada must stand by its legal obligations to maintain its maintenance operations in Canada. He pointed out that Air Canada has to listen to the House of Commons when it comes to certain business decisions.

Fournier said that the provincial government is willing to take the airline to court.

Economic Development Minister Sam Hamad said his ministry was participating in talks with several different companies to ensure the workers laid-off from Aveos last month would be able to find employment somewhere else.

Meanwhile the Fonds de solidarité FTQ said earlier this week that discussions are in place to try and reopen the Aveos aircraft maintenance plant.

Aveos, which was created by Air Canada in 2007 when the airline spun off its maintenance division into a separate company, shut down abruptly in March.

The company said the airline had diverted so much long-term maintenance work to other countries that it could no longer operate.
