An abandoned incinerator in Montreal caught fire early Monday morning and firefighters are considering it suspicious.
The empty building belongs to the city and is located in the Rosemont-Petite-Patrie borough on Des Carrieres Street, just east of Christophe-Colomb Avenue.
The fire began at 1 a.m. and was under control within an hour. The main challenge for the 25 firefighters at the scene was breaking through the barricaded windows.
The Montreal fire department's chief of operations Bruno Ruscio explained it was likely squatters who started the fire. There is no other possible cause, said Ruscio, since the building has no electricity. The case has been transferred to police for investigation.
No one was found in the building and no one was injured.
The Incinerateur des Carrieres has been closed down since 1993.
