Lesley Hill is expected to be appointed Quebec Director of Youth Protection on Wednesday, replacing Catherine Lemay who resigned on Monday.

Hill is a former commissioner of the Laurent Commission, which examined the state of the youth protection system following the tragic death of a Granby girl in 2019.

Under pressure, the minister responsible for social services, Lionel Carmant, said on Tuesday that he expected his new national director to be more “vocal” and more present.

He demanded Lemay's departure on Monday after media reports revealed that at least nine educators at the Cité-des-Prairies rehabilitation centre for troubled young people in Montreal had allegedly had sexual exchanges with at least five under-age residents.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on Oct. 30, 2024.
