A Montrealer has been arrested in Russia, following the seizure of the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sea carrying thirty protesters demonstrating near an Arctic oil platform.
Greenpeace’s Diego Creimer confirmed Alexandre Paul to be the second Canadian under arrest in connection with the recent protest.
Though unable to confirm his age, Creimer says Paul is in his thirties.
Another Canadian Greenpeace campaigner, Paul Ruzycki of Port Colborne, Ont. has also been arrested.
Both Ruzycki and Paul have appeared in court, been denied bail and will be held for two-months, alongside two Russian fellow demonstrators. Prosecutors are investigating them for piracy.
No ruling has been made to determine the fate of the other 27 protesters.
The oil platform is owned by Gazprom, and was slated to start pumping oil later this year.
As the MV Arctic Sunrise is under Dutch registries, The Netherlands have requested that the ship be released, and that Russia explain the legal grounds for its seizure and criminal charges against protesters.
