A 23-year-old man drowned overnight in a public pool in Riviere des Prairies.
One of the man's friends called 9-1-1 at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday to say the man was lying unconscious at the bottom of the pool.
People who live near Alexis Carrel pool say they called police around the same time, thinking that people were fighting in the park.
Officers and paramedics rushed to Alexis Carrel park and pulled the man out, then took him to hospital where doctors confirmed that he had died.
Another person found at the pool was treated for shock.
Police collected many empty bottles of liquor and beer in and around the pool, and believe the group was in the middle of a drunken party when the man fell unconscious.
Patrick Fandal frequents the park and said it's not unusual for people to arrive at the park after midnight only to climb the fence and go swimming.
"For sure we used to have a lot of people here, people are chilling, people are laughing, jokes and stuff but you know when it's hot you need to go in the pool and refresh yourself," said Fandal.
"Usually it's not a bad thing, you just want to have fun."
Police often patrol the park to make sure nobody has climbed the fence afterhours to use the pool.
The fence surrounding the pool is 1.8 m high, 60 cm higher than is required by regulations, and borough officials say they have no plans to change it.
