MONTREAL - Hydro-Quebec is asking the public to its reduce electricity use over the next few days due to the frigid forecast.

The utility company is anticipating record power consumption until the cold snap lifts on Wednesday.

According to its forecasts, consumption is expected to reach approximately 38,000 Megawatts Monday morning, exceeding the record peak of 37,230 Megawatts recorded on Jan. 16, 2009.

Hydro said clients can alleviate stress on the system by reducing their power usage during the following peak hours:

- Monday: 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

- Tuesday: 6 a.m. - 9 a.m.

Some simple tips to avoid excess power consumption include reducing lighting to the bare minimum, especially outdoors, limiting use of hot water, taking short showers and avoiding using the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.
