Quebec announced it will soon have its first solar energy farm as makes an aggressive move to back off from fossil fuels.
The farm is one of 42 measures worth $1.5 billion the provincial government laid out Monday.
The location of that solar farm has yet to be decided but will need to be quite large to comprise enough solar panels to generate 100 megawatts, enough to power 36,000 homes.
Subsidies to buy electric cars will also continue, with new charging stations added. There are currently about 15,000 electric cars on Quebec roads; the goal is to increase that to 100,000 new and used electric vehicles in three years.
Home builders will be encouraged to choose green energy sources including wind, solar and natural gas.
Subsidies will provided to convert 25,000 homes over the next three years from oil furnaces to cleaner alternatives.
Heavy trucks will be targeted as well, with 27,000 converted from diesel to propane or natural gas by 2020.
The measures are part of the government's ambitious plan to reduce Quebec's use of oil by 40 per cent by 2030. They estimate this first series of measures will cut it by 6 per cent.
The plan is meant to affect Quebecers in their daily lives, and is expected to be enough to make a noticeable difference in just three years.
